Marketing the NHL in Tampa Bay, Ont.
12:47 pm |

One thought immediately occurred to me when I read this morning that the Tampa Bay Lightning have been unexpectedly sold (subject to league approval) to an ownership group including former NHL coach Don MacLean: maybe now somebody will be able to properly market a money-losing Sun Belt franchise.
Here’s the idea: Begin an advertising blitz in Southern Ontario offering “Snowbird Packs” — groups of six Lightning home games smack in the middle of winter, when well-off Ontarians will be spending time in Florida. It’s time the NHL realized that hockey sells well in Canada, not in the Southern United States. So why not target people who love hockey, wherever they are?
Actually, for that matter, why doesn’t the NHL expand (or relocate) to Havana? Okay, that’s obviously ridiculous, but isn’t the idea of a pro sports team in Cuba kind of appealing? Let’s call them the Havana Comrades, just for the sake of argument…
